Memorial Sloan Kettering

This backlit blue glass mural, entitled Pleione, is inspired by images of gene sequencing and the promise of genetic engineering to cure disease. Meditating on the poetic mysteries of the human body, this piece invites viewers to enter into their own process of discovery. The work consists of primarily blue glass that is first fused, then kilnformed. Fusing is the technique of joining two or more pieces of glass by heat in a kiln. Kilnforming is the process of shaping glass in a kiln with heat and gravity.
