Colorful Glass Facade Concept for Wyandanch Station

Last winter, I was honored to have this colorful glass facade concept selected as one of four proposals for a public art project at Long Island Rail Road’s Wyandanch Station. While the work ultimately went unrealized, it was an interesting design challenge and I can imagine adapting it for another use in the future.
The idea behind this piece is not altogether unlike Water Walk, the painted glass installation that I created for Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital last year. However, it’s expressed in a less costly technique that was better suited for the space (a parking garage stairwell) and conformed to certain building codes. Rather than using painted glass, I proposed digitally printing a painterly design on the transparent interlayer of laminated safety glass.

The artwork itself is original, of course, taking inspiration from natural elements like water, foliage, and sunlight. As you can see in the first image, I created two color palette variations for consideration. I wanted to create something colorful and bright, providing both elegance and warmth in an otherwise cavernous concrete space.
