Glass Public Art Installation by Ivan Toth Depeña

 

This past month, I was interested to learn about Color Field, a new permanent glass public art installation at the Federal Center RTD light rail station in Lakewood, Colorado. 18 colorful glass sculptures interact with the sun by day and LEDs by night, resulting in an ever-shifting landscape of light and shadow.

This project was created in May by Charlotte, NC, and Miami, FL-based artist Ivan Toth Depeña. Apparently experimenting with applied color theory “that has us aching for some time away in the great outdoors,” Depeña designed these tree-like structures to “to change constantly and to have a direct relationship with the landscape and the solar system.” The result is an installation that looks and feels slightly different with every shift in light over the course of day into night, or season into new season, as the reflections and shadows change. I have played with this effect frequently in my own work, most recently exploring ways to make even the color of the glass appear to change, as sunlight gives way to colored interior light.
