Glass Panels on the Beach

How would you like to live in a beach house made largely out of glass panels? Sounds pretty ideal to me, especially as the temperatures drop here on the East Coast!

San Diego architect Jonathan Segal has made the dream come true for himself, transforming an empty 5,000 square foot lot into a beautiful feat of energy-efficient minimalism. To take full advantage of ocean views and create a sense of spaciousness, he limited his materials to concrete and glass, steering clear of excessive structural elements. 70% of the exterior walls are glass panels that can be opened, so that balmy San Diego weather can be fully enjoyed – not to mention that expanse of glass, combined with rooftop solar panels, shade from the overhanging roof, plus the insulating properties of the concrete and an embedded pool take care of nearly all of the home’s electricity needs.

This place ranks pretty high on my list of dream getaways made of glass, although I think Skene Catling de la Peña’s “Dairy House” still places number one. How about you? Any favorite spots to share?
